Several volunteers revitalized the Mingo Park Rain Garden/Pocket Prairie. It needed invasives removed and some new plants added to increase biodiversity. This planting absorbs storm water runoff from a neighboring parking lot so plants were specially chosen for moist site.

Before. This Rain Garden was overgrown with invasives and out of balance with a couple species dominating. But it has good bones and just needed some love!

This prairie already had some native species that spread vigorously including yellow fringed loosestrife and common milkweed. We added other native plants with similar spreading characteristics such as Canada anemone and northern sea oats. This can be a strategy for more dominant spreaders.

We expanded the Rain Garden Pocket Prairie and added a border with some shorter plants.

Look who we spotted while weeding! A monarch caterpillar on its host plant common milkweed!

Watering will be import for the next couple weeks (so we were very happy when it rained this afternoon!)

Can’t wait to see the new plants grow! Species added included Hollow Joe Pye, New England aster, wild bergamot, northern sea oats, Canada anenome, and American germander!
